Many peoples often seen dog cages (sometime called crates) as a jail or prison for dogs however this is a not true because if the cage were designed to look like dog house then it might be much more easier to change their ways of thinking that it is not a cage. Many dogs feel safe when they are in the cage and spend most of their times sleeping in there and it is an advantage to train your dog when he is a small puppies because he will get used to it when he grown up.
Always remember that cage should never be use for punishment purpose when your dog have bad behaviours or do something wrong because they will have a bad feeling toward crates, not a happy place to stay and never wanted to be in there again. Locking them in the crates for punishment reasons will also make your dog even more aggressive, unwilling to follow your command, etc. Dog are very sensitive and the main idea for cage training is to make your dog think that crates is a safe place for them to stay in all the times.
When your dog have good attitude for cage then it will be much more easier to take them along with you when going out somewhere or travelling.
Before you start to train your dog to stay in cage you must modify the cage first such as adding a blankets and soft floor for them to sleep on, water for them to drink when they are thirsty, and some toys for them to play with when they feel boring. It is very important that you must buy the size of the cage that is large enough to fit all these important things inside to make your dog feel like safe place not jail.
At first leave the cage door open all the times and after a while when your dog get used to staying in the cage (sleep in there often) then you can begin to close the door for short period of time, this make your dog feel secure and safe. Do the methods mentioned above everyday and slowly increase the period of shutting the door.
The heart of dog cage training is to make them feel safe and secure. Never use dog crate for punishment or else you will never make your dog feel safe in there again ever.
