Vegetarian Diet Dog Food - What You Need To Know

By : Jessica N
You are home with a beautiful little puppy that is now a wonderful new addition to your family. Now you need to decide what kind of diet dog food you are going to feed him.

If you're a vegetarian, you are probably thinking seriously about giving your new family member vegetarian diet dog food.

If this is something you're considering, it's important to ask if your dog will be healthy on a vegetarian diet.

We all know that dogs are carnivorous. It's in their nature. Wild dogs kill and eat animals all the time.

Although meat is a primary part of their diet, dogs in the wild also eat grains and vegetables... usually in a partially or pre-digested form from their kills. In any case, dogs are omnivores. Their teeth tell the whole story.

If you take a good look at your dog's teeth, you should see teeth made for tearing and grinding. It's from this that we know they're omnivores. So therefore, they eat plants and meat.

If you are determined to have your dog be on a vegetarian diet dog food plan, don't lose hope. It can be done.

You need to provide your dog the best nutrition possible to thrive and grow, not just survive. He needs protein in his diet, which will give him energy, stamina, healthy skin, and a healthy coat of fur.

It is also extremely important that your dog get essential amino acids. This is key to his health because there are 10 amino acids that cannot be made by his body.

These can be given to your dog in the form of activated flaxseed oil, which has the Omega 6 fatty acids, and in salmon or some other cold water fish oil that contains the Omega 3 fatty acids.

Just as you would with any diet choice, you will want to do plenty of research before putting your dog on a vegetarian diet. Be sure to review all the options with your vet.
